BT invests into next-gen broadband

BT, in an attempt to improve UK broadband, plans to spend approximately 1.5bn, deploying fibre optic technology across the country. This action comes as a result of Ofcom’s suggestions, and their promises to protect investments.

Earlier this month, Ofcom suggested that it would protect operators from of their financial investments, if they would agree to invest in next-gen broadband.

BT was the first operator to pledge its investment into the industry advancement, promising to help with providing fibre to various facilities. With their assistance, homes and offices across the broadband UK network should be provided with fibre broadband access, a favorable service for consumers.

With this innovational infrastructure, users will be offered over 100mbps of bandwidth, accessible to all residents by 2012. According to BT, the bandwidth should be available to everyone, no exceptions. The deployment will not target specific locations, but will implement installment across the country.

In total, BT may invest over 6 billion Euros into the deployment of this technology.

Ofcom plans to back its original statements, supporting BT investments for fibre deployment. In September, Ofcom will publish new proposals on the deployment process, detailing all investments which have been presented. Hopefully, if their incentive continues to attract investments, next-gen broadband will be available soon.
